Synopsis
Minds of a Giant explores what it is like to be an elephant, as revealed by revolutionary new research. As scientists struggle to find out how many elephants are left in Africa, they discover intriguing new behavior. In order to survive their current crisis, the elephants are learning. We are discovering that elephants must be considered one of the most clever and complex creatures on the planet. They exhibit empathy, grief, joy, fear and revengefulness, but their complexity goes beyond emotion. They have self-awareness, can co-operate and pass on information, and adapt to solve problems in ways we never knew.

Mike Chase et son équipe de scientifiques poursuivent leur observation des derniers éléphants sauvages d'Afrique. Le commerce de l'ivoire produit toujours ses terribles effets. Comment protéger cette espèce menacée par la cupidité ? En analysant leurs déplacements et leur cerveau, les chercheurs comprennent que les éléphants sont capables de mémorisation. Différents tests avec des miroirs et des hauts parleurs montrent qu'ils communiquent entre eux et se transmettent des informations. Ainsi, ils peuvent nourrir un esprit de vengeance. Comme chez les grands primates et les cétacés, les éléphants sont eux aussi des créatures complexes dotées d'une véritable conscience de soi.
